Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What should I wear to class?

Beginners can wear loose-fitting, comfortable workout clothes. Eventually, you'll need a traditional judo gi (uniform) that you can purchase from online retailers or you can purchase from our dojo. If you have questions about sizing or need recommendations, ask Sensei Daniel.

You are welcome to wear Judo or BJJ Gis that you own from past dojos or martial arts schools. Judo Gis are generally more durable and better suited for training than BJJ gis, however a BJJ gi will suffice for beginners.

Q: Do I need prior experience to join?

A: No prior experience is necessary. We welcome beginners of all fitness levels and ages. Please inform Sensei Daniel about any injuries you may have.

Q: Who is the instructor?

A: Sensei Daniel Diaz (shodan) has 10 years of Judo experience and has trained under a variety of coaches including: Sensei’s Walter Miller and AJ Hart (University of Florida Judo Club), Dr. Rhadi Ferguson (Tampa Florida Judo Club), Ken Barlow and Chiang-Liu Chen (Rocky Mountain Judo). Sensei Daniel is passionate about sharing the teachings that these great Judoka have imparted on him.

Q: What is Judo?

A: Judo (Ju meaning “Gentle”, and Do meaning “way”) was founded by Jigoro Kano in 1882. It emphasizes practical grappling techniques such as: throws, pins, chokes, and armbars.

Q: What can I expect in a Judo class?

A: Classes typically include warm-ups, ukemi (breakfalls), uchikomi (fit-ins), partner drills, nagekomi (throwing practice), randori (sparring), and conditioning exercises like crash pad work and strength training.

Q: Is Judo safe?

A: Safety is a priority for us. While Judo is a full-contact combat sport, controlled sparring is introduced gradually as students progress in skill and experience. As with any contact martial art or sport, there is a degree of risk of physical injuries. All new students must sign a liability waiver.

Q: Can children participate in Judo?

A: At this time, we do not offer classes for children. Teenagers 16 years old and above are welcome to join our adult classes at Sensei Daniel’s discretion.

Q: What are the benefits of practicing Judo?

A: Practicing Judo offers numerous benefits, including improved fitness, self-confidence, discipline, stress relief, and the opportunity to learn self-defense skills.

“Face your fear, empty yourself, trust your own voice, let go of control, have faith in outcomes, connect with a larger purpose, derive meaning from the struggle.”

- Jigoro Kano

Q: Are Salt Lake City Judo classes included for USA Stars Judo students?

A: We are extremely grateful for the support and generosity of Sensei Adam Blackburn towards our fledging group. However, we are a separate organization with separate fees, management and member admin. Therefore, members of USA Stars Judo must separately purchase a SLC Judo membership to train with us. Note that all are welcome, and many train at both!

Q: How can I get started?

A: Contact us to schedule a trial class. We encourage prospective students to observe or try out a class and speak with Sensei Daniel to learn more about our dojo and Judo.
